article

Thanks you to those who still drop by this site. I appreciate your comments and the fact you come here.

Obviously, my translation plans have been somewhat stalled, but they will resume again some time soon.

In the meantime, here's an interesting article about the translator of Danish poet, Inger Christensen.

Liked the article about the translator Susanna Nied. What an astonishing medium language is to work with.

The poetry translation I've done has mostly been from Spanish (Neruda, Lorca, Nancy Morejon), though have ventured into a few other languages (mainly European ones) from time to time (Yannis Ritsos, Bertolt Brecht, Dante, Akhmatova, among others). Translating (as I'm guessing you've found) can be a good way to learn about poetry and language.

I tend to translate mostly when I'm dissatisfied with the existing translations of a poet I've read, and have only ever published one poem translation I've done.

I've never studied any languages (other than English) formally, except Spanish once very briefly, and I've never felt confident enough in my knowledge of the original languages to feel right about publishing the translations. Though maybe eventually.
